Kabiru Taminu Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, has been elected as the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His election was officially announced on Saturday night by Senator Ben Obi, a former representative for Anambra Central, during the party’s national convention in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Turaki’s victory came after Lado Danmarke, the 2023 governorship candidate from Katsina State, withdrew from the contest, allowing Turaki to run unopposed. Despite his withdrawal, Danmarke still managed to receive 275 votes from delegates, while Turaki achieved a significant win with 1,516 votes, underscoring the decisive nature of his election.

Senator Obi reported that a total of 1,834 votes were cast for the chairmanship position, with 43 votes deemed invalid. “The results clearly indicate that Taminu Turaki has emerged as the National Chairman of the PDP with 1,516 votes,” Obi stated.

In related announcements from the convention, Solarin Sunday Adekunle was elected as the Deputy National Organising Secretary, securing 633 votes. However, the elections for the positions of National Youth Leader and Deputy National Legal Adviser were postponed. Additionally, 17 other positions were uncontested, leading to all nominees being declared elected.

Obi also noted that out of the 3,131 delegates expected to participate, 2,745 were accredited for the convention.
