Kano Governor Releases ₦5.6bn Gratuity Package for Nearly 1,200 Former Councillors

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the disbursement of more than ₦5.6 billion to settle gratuity payments owed to 1,198 former councillors who served between 2018 and 2020 in all 44 local government areas of the state.

The announcement was made at a ceremony in Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, where government officials, past councillors, and community leaders gathered to witness the event.

Governor Yusuf said the gesture was part of his administration’s resolve to uphold the welfare of public servants and recognize their contributions to the growth of Kano State. He noted that the payment would ease the economic burden on the beneficiaries, many of whom had been waiting years for their entitlement.

“Our government will continue to focus on initiatives that touch the lives of the people, particularly those that restore dignity and promote fairness,” he assured.

Several of the recipients expressed joy and gratitude, commending the governor for honoring his word.

Abdullahi Haruna from Kabo Local Government described the move as long overdue, recalling how many of them had lost hope of ever receiving the payment.

From Doguwa Local Government, Musa Ibrahim confirmed he had already received his bank alert. “This money will make a real difference for me and my children,” he said.

Another beneficiary, Abubakar Isa from Fagge, described the governor as “a blessing to the people,” saying Yusuf had restored confidence by acting where previous administrations had failed.

The payout was widely welcomed as a bold step, seen by many as a sign of Yusuf’s determination to run a people-centered government.
