Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has issued a formal apology to the Federal High Court over his recent courtroom outburst during proceedings on terrorism charges filed by the Federal Government. Kanu, in a prepared statement read by his lead counsel and former Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Kanu Agabi, SAN, expressed deep regret for his conduct, particularly apologizing to Justice Binta Nyako and the lead prosecutor, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN. He noted that although he had reasons to be aggrieved, his actions were unjustifiable—adding that Justice Nyako and Chief Awomolo did not deserve his verbal attack. Kanu vowed to maintain decorum and pursue peaceful resolution moving forward.
Chief Awomolo accepted the apology—citing that his role was to prosecute, not persecute and stressed his determination to a fair and swift trial. During his re-arraignment on Friday before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Kanu pleaded not guilty to a seven-count charge including accusations of inciting violence through illegal broadcasts and intimidating Nigeria’s unity. The proceedings were held under tight security by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) with the case adjourned for further hearing.
