Kenyan long-distance runner Edwin Koech emerged victorious in the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, securing his second title in the prestigious race.
Koech crossed the finish line in a record time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, earning the $50,000 first-place prize and adding to his previous triumph in the 2023 edition.
The 2025 marathon witnessed an impressive turnout, with around 37,000 runners participating in both the 10km and 42km races. Speaking at the event, General Manager of the race and former Nigerian long jumper Yusuf Ali confirmed the figure, stating it was based on the number of running kits distributed from the over 60,000 registered participants.
The 42km race kicked off at 6:30 AM from the National Stadium in Surulere, while the 10km race began at 9:30 AM from Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki, with both concluding at Eko Atlantic City.
Now in its 10th year, the Lagos City Marathon continues to grow in prestige, boasting a World Athletics gold label. Organizers are now aiming for the platinum label, which would make it the first marathon race in Africa to achieve the status.
In preparation for the event, the Lagos State Government had announced an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversions across key routes between 5 AM and 1 PM on Friday, ensuring smooth logistics for the marathon.
Koech’s latest triumph further cements Kenya’s dominance in global long-distance races, while the Lagos City Marathon continues to establish itself as a major event on the international athletics calendar.
