The 2024/25 Nigerian football season reaches its climax today as NPFL side Kwara United take on lower-division Abakaliki FC in the President Federation Cup final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Both sides are chasing not just silverware but a coveted spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Abakaliki FC have been the surprise package of the tournament, knocking out four top-flight teams, including two-time African champions Enyimba, despite battling relegation in the Nigerian National League.

Victory for the Ebonyi club would echo history, recalling when second-tier Leventis United stunned Abiola Babes in the 1984 Challenge Cup final.

Meanwhile, Kwara United will look to star forward Wasiu Alalade to provide the goals and prevent another giant-killing act.

Bayelsa United coach Dipreye Teibowei believes Abakaliki’s task is tough but not impossible. “It’s a new dimension that is emerging, as we have a team from the lower division in the final, and anything can happen,” he said.

In the women’s final, defending champions Rivers Angels chase a record tenth title against Nasarawa Amazons.

The tie revives memories of the 2019 final, where the Amazons triumphed.

Victory today would allow Rivers Angels to avenge that defeat and retain their crown.
