The chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, has revealed that the Labour Party currently operates under three separate factions in Lagos State.
This division, she noted, has complicated the commission’s ability to effectively engage with the party ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile disclosed this on Thursday during a stakeholders’ forum in Ikeja.
She stated that LASIEC is awaiting a directive from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on which faction of the Labour Party it should officially recognise for the 12 July polls.
Despite the challenge, the LASIEC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and conclusive elections across the state.
She emphasised that the foundation of a credible electoral process lies in building public confidence and trust—an outcome that can only be achieved through collective participation and accountability.
All Inclusion
In a bid to foster inclusivity, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile announced that LASIEC has provided free nomination forms for female aspirants, persons living with disabilities, and youths to be accessed through their respective political parties.
She further urged political stakeholders to play active roles in mobilising the electorate, promoting internal democracy within their parties, and supporting the Commission’s efforts in creating a level playing field for all contestants.
The chairman noted that LASIEC would continue to collaborate closely with key stakeholders and interest groups to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
Also speaking at the event, LASIEC Permanent Secretary, Folashade Omowole, highlighted the importance of voter education in promoting civic responsibility and curbing voter apathy, misinformation, and electoral violence.
She assured stakeholders of the Commission’s dedication to transparency and fairness, stressing that credible elections reflecting the will of the people can only be achieved through collaboration, advocacy, and responsible leadership from all involved in the election process.
