The Lagos State government has confirmed 10 cases of diphtheria following laboratory tests carried out on 76 samples between January 1 and March 27, 2025. Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi revealed that 36,310 individuals have been vaccinated as part of the state’s response to the outbreak which has affected several local government areas, with Eti-Osa recording the highest number of suspected cases.
Abayomi identified key locations linked to confirmed cases including King’s College in Eti-Osa, Lagos State Model School in Alimosho and Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Mushin. Targeted vaccination and public enlightenment campaigns are ongoing in these areas. So far, 21 individuals have received Diphtheria Antitoxin treatment, with King’s College accounting for the highest recipients.
Authorities have traced 118 potential contacts—completing follow-ups for 100 individuals while 18 remain under observation. The commissioner appealed to the residents to adhere to hygiene measures and promptly report symptoms. He affirmed that the state, in collaboration with health partners remains committed to combating the outbreak.
