Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member known as “Raye,” has alleged that her discharge certificate has been withheld in retaliation for her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s government. Earlier this year, Uguamaye gained attention for a viral TikTok video in which she criticized the administration and described Lagos as “smelling.”

In a recent Instagram video, Uguamaye claimed that her Local Government Inspector (LGI) denied her clearance for April, despite her presence on the scheduled date. She alleged that she was repeatedly told to “go to the back” until her file was seized and she was ordered to leave. She later received notification that her certificate would not be issued due to her purported failure to complete the April clearance, which she disputes.

“I genuinely wish I wasn’t a Lagos State corps member because it’s a waste of my time,” she stated on social media, expressing her intent to move on from the situation.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore criticized the NYSC, alleging that Uguamaye is being punished for her outspoken views. He vowed to continue advocating for her rights, emphasizing the broader implications for Nigerians facing systemic oppression. Sowore noted that Uguamaye’s activism has previously prompted an increase in corps members’ allowances.

The case has garnered significant national attention, with prominent figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressing support for Uguamaye. They condemned any attempts to silence her criticisms.

In response, the NYSC released a statement clarifying that Uguamaye’s certificate was withheld due to valid disciplinary reasons, stating that her service year has been extended by two months for failing to attend the April biometrics clearance. The NYSC emphasized that this extension is standard procedure and urged the public to avoid politicizing the issue.

As the situation unfolds, it highlights ongoing tensions between civic engagement and governmental authority in Nigeria.
