Lamine Yamal produced a standout performance on Thursday night, scoring twice as Spain edged France 5–4 in a dramatic UEFA Nations League semi-final.

The 17-year-old’s display has further elevated his status as a leading contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

The Barcelona forward was instrumental in securing Spain’s place in their third straight Nations League final, where they will face Portugal.

His two goals added to an already impressive season in which he has helped Barcelona claim LaLiga and Spanish Cup titles, while contributing consistently for the national team.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente praised Yamal’s impact, calling him “the best player in the world” and expressing belief that the teenager is deserving of the Ballon d’Or.

Yamal’s main competition is expected to come from France’s Ousmane Dembele, who has won four trophies with Paris Saint-Germain this season, including the UEFA Champions League.

Speaking after the match, Yamal said he remains focused on giving his best and letting his performances speak for themselves. “It’s always best to speak on the pitch,” he said.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on September 22, with nominees set to be announced in early August.

Performances between August 1, 2024 and July 31, 2025 will be considered. With his Nations League exploits now added to his résumé, Yamal’s case continues to grow.
