Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Tuesday barricaded the institution’s main entrance in protest against the relocation of the Department of Anatomy and Physiology to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences.

The department was previously under the College of Health Sciences within the institution’s medical sciences structure.

Hundreds of students participated in the demonstration, chanting solidarity songs and voicing strong opposition to the decision by the university management to move and merge the department. Protesters carried placards and slogans defending the academic placement of the discipline within the medical sciences framework.

“LAUTECH!!! Don’t separate Physiology from Medicine. Protect the integrity of Medical Sciences. Physiology belongs to Basic Medical Sciences. Our discipline is not experimental. LAUTECH!! We won’t be silenced,” the students declared during the protest.

An internal memo obtained in Ibadan indicated that the university Senate approved the relocation at its meeting held on January 21, 2026. The document stated that the Department of Anatomy and Physiology would be moved out of the College of Health Sciences to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences.

The memo, signed by Olayinka O. Balogun and copied to the Vice Chancellor, also noted that non-medical staff members attached to the department would be transferred to the new faculty to facilitate career progression.

Despite the administrative justification, the students insisted the move undermines the academic identity of physiology and anatomy as core basic medical sciences, warning that the decision could affect the integrity of their training.

They vowed to sustain the protest until the university management reverses the relocation.

As of press time, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Lekan Fadeyi, could not be reached for official comment on the development.
