Liverpool have agreed a £69 million (€80m) deal with Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike, with negotiations ongoing over potential add-ons that could push the total package to £78 million (€90m).
Talks between the clubs continued on Sunday as they worked to finalise the structure of the bonuses.
While no full agreement is in place yet, both sides remain confident of wrapping up the deal soon.
The Reds made their approach earlier this week after learning that Newcastle were unwilling to sell top target Alexander Isak.
Ekitike, who is keen on a move to the Premier League, views Liverpool as his preferred destination, especially after Newcastle had a bid for him rejected.
The 23-year-old striker was left on the bench during Frankfurt’s pre-season clash with FSV Frankfurt on Saturday.
Speaking after the match, the club’s manager admitted Ekitike’s potential exit would be “a bitter loss”.
Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 appearances for Frankfurt last season, playing a key role in their qualification for the Champions League.
