Liverpool have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to sign German star Florian Wirtz in a deal worth up to £116 million.

The agreement includes a guaranteed £100m and a further £16m in add-ons, which would only be triggered by sustained success at the highest level. If activated, the total package would set a new British transfer record.

Wirtz, 21, has been a standout performer since debuting for Leverkusen at 17, netting 57 goals in 197 appearances.

He played a key role in their historic 2024 Bundesliga title win and has also earned 31 caps for Germany, scoring seven times.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich were also linked with the playmaker but pulled out due to the high price.

Wirtz will be Liverpool’s second arrival from Leverkusen this summer after the £34m signing of right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Talks are also ongoing over a £45m-£50m deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.

Following their Premier League title win under Arne Slot, the Reds are making bold moves in the market.

Their spending has been boosted by a conservative approach in recent windows, with last summer’s only notable signings being Federico Chiesa (£12.5m) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m).
