Liverpool began the defence of their Premier League crown with a pulsating 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, sealed by two goals in the final minutes on an emotional night at Anfield.
Before kick-off, the stadium paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in July.
A minute’s silence preceded the match, with applause in the 20th minute in honour of Jota’s shirt number.
Arne Slot handed Premier League debuts to four summer signings, and it was £70m recruit Hugo Ekitike who broke the deadlock eight minutes before half-time.
The French forward then set up Cody Gakpo early in the second half to double the lead.
The game was briefly halted in the first half after Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo reported racial abuse from the stands.
Showing admirable composure, Semenyo later struck twice, first from close range, then finishing a swift counterattack, to haul the visitors level.
With the contest finely poised, Federico Chiesa popped up with his first league goal for Liverpool two minutes from time before Mohamed Salah completed the win with a precise finish in front of The Kop.
