Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car crash in northern Spain at the age of 28, just two weeks after marrying his childhood girlfriend, Rute Cardoso.

Jota was reportedly travelling with his younger brother, André, 26, who also did not survive, according to Marca.

The accident happened on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla in Zamora province, a busy route for drivers crossing from northern Portugal into Spain.

Emergency services said they received multiple calls about a vehicle on fire after the crash. When firefighters and medics arrived, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, had spoken of being “the luckiest man in the world” in an interview released just yesterday, celebrating his recent wedding and family life. He leaves behind his wife Rute and their three children.
