Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing charges after a two-year investigation, with the West Ham midfielder now only facing a minor sanction for failing to fully cooperate with the inquiry.

The 27-year-old Brazilian had risked a lifetime ban if found guilty of deliberately collecting yellow cards to affect betting markets.

The Football Association opened its investigation in August 2023 and charged Paqueta in May 2024 over four incidents spanning matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth.

A regulatory commission ruled the allegations “not proven,” ending an ordeal that saw Paqueta in tears on the pitch and his dream £85m move to Manchester City collapse.

Paqueta expressed gratitude to his wife, family, and West Ham fans, calling the case a “nightmare” that he can now finally leave behind.

His lawyer, Alastair Campbell, described the Brazilian as “very emotional and very delighted” after clearing his name.

While the commission found him guilty of two counts of failing to provide full cooperation during the investigation, it will decide on an appropriate sanction for those breaches in due course.

West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady said the club “resolutely stood by” Paqueta and praised his professionalism throughout the saga.

With the betting allegations dismissed, the midfielder is now free to focus on his career and help the Hammers in the new Premier League season.
