The Los Angeles Lakers have secured the long-term future of Luka Doncic after the superstar guard signed a maximum three-year extension worth $165m on Saturday.

The deal keeps him from entering free agency next summer and reaffirms the franchise’s plans to build around the Slovenian sensation.

Doncic, signed in February, immediately became the focal point of the Purple and Gold, starting all 28 regular-season games after his arrival.

“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organisation, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family,” Doncic said. “I believe in what we’re building and I’ll keep working to bring another championship to Los Angeles.”

Lakers President Rob Pelinka hailed the extension as “a monumental moment” for the franchise. “Luka is one of the game’s most transcendent players,” he said. “His on-court dominance and passion are without compare.”

The extension signals the Lakers’ commitment to chasing titles with Doncic at the heart of their plans, as the All-NBA guard looks to add another championship banner to the Staples Center rafters.
