Governor Seyi Makinde has officially approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, ending a prolonged period of speculation and controversy surrounding the ancient throne.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. According to the statement, the decision followed extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of Oyo kingmakers.
“Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” the statement read.
The selection process has been fraught with controversies and legal battles since the passing of the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in April 2022. The throne has remained vacant for over a year, during which disagreements emerged between the state government and the Oyomesi over the choice of a successor.
Earlier in the process, the Oyomesi had reportedly selected Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as the Alaafin-elect. However, the state government did not support the choice, leading to a deadlock. In 2023, the Oyomesi took the matter to court, challenging the government’s involvement in the selection process.
Friday’s announcement marks a significant development in the bid to fill the revered traditional stool. Prince Owoade’s appointment is expected to restore stability to the ancient Oyo kingdom, a historically significant cultural hub in Yoruba land.
However, it remains unclear whether this decision resolves all lingering disputes surrounding the throne. Stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions, with some praising the governor for taking decisive action and others urging further reconciliation efforts to unify the kingdom.
The Alaafin of Oyo holds a vital role as the custodian of Yoruba culture and traditions, making the selection of a new monarch a matter of profound significance. Observers are now watching closely to see how Prince Owoade will navigate the responsibilities of his new position amid the backdrop of recent controversies.
As the Oyo people prepare to welcome their new monarch, the state government has urged all parties to support Prince Owoade in fostering peace and progress in the kingdom.
