Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has defended Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, insisting that his reckless challenge was driven by emotion rather than malice.
Mateta, 27, required 25 stitches to his left ear after Roberts’ high boot caught him in the head during Palace’s FA Cup win on March 1.
Roberts was shown a red card and later subjected to social media abuse, despite apologizing to Mateta that same evening.
‘It Was Just a Mistake’ – Mateta on Roberts’ Challenge
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mateta revealed that Roberts reached out to him while he was still in the hospital.
“Liam texted me and I told him, ‘It’s OK, it’s football.’ He apologised. He was worried.”
Roberts’ suspension has since been extended from three to six matches, but Mateta believes the goalkeeper never intended to harm him.
“I don’t think he woke up and thought, ‘I want to cut JP’s head off.’ There’s a lot of pressure, and sometimes too much emotion makes you do crazy things. It was just a mistake. You learn from it.”
Mateta Eyes FA Cup Quarter-Final Return
The French forward missed Palace’s recent league win over Ipswich but traveled with the squad for a training camp in Marbella, working individually to regain fitness.
While Palace boss Oliver Glasner hopes to have his top scorer fit for the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham on March 29, Mateta remains uncertain about his return date.
“I don’t know yet. I’m still in touch with the specialists and the doctor. Hopefully soon. Hopefully I can play against Fulham.”
When he does return, the former Mainz and Lyon striker confirmed he will wear a protective mask while his stitches continue to heal.
“I need to wear a mask, something comfortable. I’ll take the best one available.”
