Two penalties from Kylian Mbappé guided Real Madrid to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Olympique de Marseille at the Santiago Bernabéu, maintaining Los Blancos’ flawless record against Les Olympiens in their Champions League history.
Madrid started with intent as Mbappé volleyed wide and Franco Mastantuono rattled the post, while Gerónimo Rulli produced fine saves to deny Rodrygo and Mbappé.
But the visitors landed the first blow when Mason Greenwood dispossessed Arda Güler and set up Timothy Weah to drive past Thibaut Courtois in the 22nd minute.
Weah nearly doubled his tally soon after, but Marseille’s momentum was undone by Geoffrey Kondogbia’s rash challenge on Rodrygo inside the area.
Mbappé dispatched the resulting penalty with trademark composure to level matters.
The first half ended with more Madrid pressure as Rulli thwarted Mastantuono and Mbappé, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the side netting in a rare Marseille chance.
After the break, Mbappé’s effort was deflected onto the bar before Aubameyang tested Courtois at the other end. Dani Carvajal’s needless red card for a headbutt on Rulli threatened to derail Madrid, but fortune favoured the hosts when Facundo Medina handled in the box.
Mbappé converted his second penalty, squeezing it past Rulli to complete the turnaround.
Greenwood had two late chances to equalise but failed to beat Courtois, ensuring Real Madrid opened their UCL campaign with three points while Marseille’s travel woes continued.
