Kylian Mbappe is edging closer to full fitness, according to Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, after making his Club World Cup debut in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Juventus.
The French forward, recovering from gastroenteritis, came on as a second-half substitute in the round of 16 and is expected to be sharper for Saturday’s quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund.
“Day by day he will get better,” Alonso said. “By the time of the quarters he should be in much better shape.”
Gonzalo Garcia scored the winner, his third of the tournament while Federico Valverde impressed with a dominant midfield display.
Alonso also praised Vinicius Jr., whose move back to the left flank helped stretch Juventus’s defence, and hailed the team’s defensive discipline after limiting the Italians to few chances.
