The Nigerian military has described Bello Turji, a notorious terrorist and bandit leader operating in North-West Nigeria, as a “dead man walking,” vowing to bring an end to his reign of terror.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted the military’s progress in combating terrorism across the country in 2024. He affirmed that sustained military operations have significantly weakened terrorist networks, leading to the elimination of key leaders and their operatives.

“Throughout the year, our troops have neutralized thousands of terrorists, including several high-ranking commanders,” Buba stated. “We remain resolute in our mission, and I can assure you that individuals like Bello Turji, who continue to sow terror, are living on borrowed time. Turji is merely a dead man walking and will soon join the long list of terror leaders we have eliminated.”

The military spokesperson listed some of the prominent terrorist leaders neutralized in 2024, including Halilu Sububu, Dutse Mainasara Idda, Mallam Saleh Umaru, Mohammed Amadu, Abubakar Musa, Adamu Tanko Ibrahim, and Yellow Dogon Rakumi. Others named were Isiya Boderi, Alhaji Baldu, Usman Modi Modi, Kachalla Halilu, Kachalla Tukur, Amir Ibrahim Bukar, Saidu Hassan Yellow, Buba Kachalla Bukar, Bakura Jega, and Abba Tukur.

General Buba stressed that the military remains committed to protecting Nigeria from terror threats, using overwhelming force to safeguard lives and property. He stated that the ongoing offensive has not only dismantled terrorist strongholds but also led to the surrender of numerous combatants and their families.

“The intensity of our operations has left terrorists with little choice but to surrender,” Buba said. “This is a testament to the effectiveness of our strategies and the determination of our troops to bring lasting peace to the country.”

Bello Turji, known for leading violent attacks, kidnappings, and mass killings in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger states, has been a major target of military operations. His designation as a “dead man walking” underscores the military’s resolve to eliminate his network and restore security to communities ravaged by banditry and terrorism.

The military’s successes in 2024 mark a significant turning point in the fight against insecurity in the North-West. By dismantling terror cells and neutralizing their leaders, the armed forces have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and stability of the nation.

This declaration sends a strong message to remaining criminal elements: the Nigerian military will not relent until peace is fully restored across the country.
