In a historic development, Mojisola Meranda has been elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Her emergence follows the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015.

Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was elected by members of the House during plenary on Monday, marking a significant shift in leadership. The surprise impeachment and subsequent election unfolded swiftly, signaling a new chapter for the legislative arm of the state government.

A seasoned lawmaker, Meranda has been a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly for three consecutive legislatures, serving in the 8th, 9th, and the current 10th Assembly. Prior to her election as Speaker, she was the Chief Whip in the 9th Assembly, where she demonstrated her leadership capabilities.

Meranda, a Lagos indigene, has a diverse professional background. Before her legislative career, she served in various capacities at the Apapa Local Government and gained valuable experience in the private sector. Her track record of public service and leadership positions her as a capable leader for the House.

The new Speaker is one of only four women in the 40-member 10th Assembly, highlighting her trailblazing role in a traditionally male-dominated space.

Her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was first elected to the House in 2007 and served as Speaker for eight years after being re-elected in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. Despite his longevity in office, Obasa’s tenure in recent years was marred by reports of strained relations with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Speculation also abounds regarding his gubernatorial ambition to succeed the incumbent in 2027.

Meranda’s election is being celebrated as a milestone for gender inclusivity in Lagos State politics. Observers note that her leadership will not only bring a fresh perspective to the House but also inspire more women to pursue political careers in Nigeria.

As the first woman to occupy this esteemed position, Meranda is expected to navigate the complexities of legislative governance while working with her colleagues to ensure effective representation and delivery of good governance to the people of Lagos State.

Her emergence as Speaker marks a historic moment in the political history of Lagos, with many anticipating the positive impact of her leadership on the Assembly and the state at large.
