Jose Mourinho has been confirmed as Bruno Lage’s successor at Benfica, marking his return to the Estadio da Luz a quarter of a century after his first spell at the club.
The 62-year-old, out of work since leaving Fenerbahce, has signed a contract running until the end of the 2026/27 season, though either side can end it earlier.
Mourinho said he felt “more alive than ever” and pledged to dedicate himself fully to the club and its fans.
His second stint at Benfica begins this Saturday in Liga Portugal, with the Eagles sitting fourth, five points behind Porto but with a game in hand.
His first European match will be against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the club where he rose to global prominence.
Mourinho previously managed Benfica for 11 games in 2000, recording six wins and finishing with a derby triumph over Sporting.
Since then, he has built one of football’s most decorated coaching careers, lifting league titles in Portugal, England, Spain, and Italy, as well as winning the Champions League twice.
