The National Assembly has postponed its resumption date from January 28 to February 4, 2025, to allow committees to conclude ongoing budget defence sessions with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The announcement was made on Saturday in separate statements issued by the clerks of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Andrew Nwoba, Clerk of the Senate, emphasized that the decision was taken to accommodate the budget engagement process. “Please be informed that there is a change in the resumption date due to the ongoing budget defence,” he said. “It has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 28th January 2025, to Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at 11:00 a.m. prompt.”
Similarly, the House of Representatives, through its Clerk, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, announced the postponement in an internal memorandum directed to members of the House. Akin Rotimi, the House spokesperson, confirmed the development, stating that the decision was made to ensure thorough scrutiny of the budget.
“The House of Representatives has announced the postponement of its plenary resumption, previously scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The new date for resumption is now set for Tuesday, February 4, 2025,” the statement read.
“This measure ensures that Committees have sufficient time to conclude ongoing budget engagements and defences with MDAs. It also ensures a thorough and comprehensive approach to legislative responsibilities. The House remains committed to fulfilling its legislative mandate for the benefit of Nigerians and appreciates the understanding of all stakeholders,” the statement added.
The postponement is part of efforts by the National Assembly to ensure a meticulous budget defence process. Legislators across both chambers are currently engaging MDAs to scrutinize their budget proposals for the 2025 fiscal year, a key step in ensuring accountability and proper allocation of resources.
Observers have noted the importance of these budget defence sessions, which allow lawmakers to assess the spending plans of government agencies in line with national priorities. While some stakeholders expressed concerns about the resumption delay, others lauded the move, citing the need for thoroughness in the budget process.
The new resumption date, February 4, 2025, will see lawmakers reconvene to deliberate on pending legislative matters, including finalizing the 2025 appropriation bill. The National Assembly leadership has assured Nigerians of its commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in the budgetary process.
