Ndume Faults Tinubu Over Alleged Breach of Federal Character in Appointments

Senator Ali Ndume has criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly neglecting the principle of federal character in recent political appointments. The Borno South lawmaker argued that the appointments do not reflect the inclusive structure mandated by Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution which requires equitable representation of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and regional groups. Ndume, a ranking senator in the National Assembly asserted that he had provided figures to back his claims—emphasizing that his criticism is rooted in constitutional duty rather than personal sentiments. “It’s a constitutional provision, and Section 14(3) is very clear,” he mentioned. He cautioned that continued disregard for the federal character principle could trigger national discontent—urging the President to address the alleged infractions swiftly. Ndume emphasized his role as a legislator, saying that he is constitutionally obliged to call attention to perceived irregularities. “We are supposed to oversight the acts of Mr President. That is what we swore to do. It’s not personal,” he concluded.
