The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing renewed internal turmoil as National Chairman Umar Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu have sent contradictory instructions to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the timing of party congresses in three states.

In a letter dated September 25, Damagum informed INEC that the congresses scheduled for Cross River, Plateau, and Kebbi States—originally set for September 27, 2025—were now postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances and operational logistic challenges.”

He told the commission that a new date would be communicated in due course.

Less than 24 hours later, Anyanwu, in a letter dated September 26, contradicted Damagum’s directive, insisting that the congresses should proceed as originally scheduled and that INEC should disregard the chairman’s letter.

He further declared that any letter to INEC lacking both the signatures of the National Chairman and National Secretary should not be recognized.

The conflicting communications highlight deepening leadership conflicts within PDP, coming at a time when the party is already under pressure over factional battles ahead of its elective Congress and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
