The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named Éric Chelle, former Mali national team coach, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The appointment, announced on Tuesday, makes Chelle the third coach to lead Nigeria’s senior men’s team since Jose Peseiro’s resignation in March 2024.

Chelle’s immediate task is to oversee the home-based Super Eagles at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), taking place from February 1-28 across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

Speaking on the decision, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau emphasized the need for a seamless transition between the CHAN squad and the senior team, ensuring a pipeline of talent from local players.

A former Mali international with five caps, Chelle boasts coaching experience with clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

He has led the Malian national team since 2022, narrowly missing a semifinal spot at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Beyond CHAN, Chelle’s primary challenge will be steering the Super Eagles to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Nigeria currently sitting fifth in their qualification group.
