Nigeria edge Rwanda to keep World Cup hopes alive

September 7, 2025

Nigeria boosted their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification chances with a 1-0 victory over Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday.

Substitute Tolu Arokodare struck the decisive goal five minutes after the restart, reacting quickest to Ola Aina’s blocked effort and slotting past Rwanda goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.

The Super Eagles had earlier thought they were ahead in the seventh minute when Victor Osimhen converted Ademola Lookman’s cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Osimhen’s night ended prematurely in the first half after a challenge from Claude Niyomugabo forced him off, but Nigeria’s persistence paid off through Arokodare’s impact.

Rwanda, who had promised to test the hosts, rarely threatened and were contained in midfield.

The result moves Nigeria to third place in the group with 10 points from seven games, trailing Benin Republic and South Africa.

The Super Eagles now travel to Bloemfontein for a crucial clash with South Africa on Tuesday, where victory will be vital to their qualification hopes.
