Russia and Nigeria played out a 1-1 draw in their international friendly on Friday, with both sides settling for a share of the spoils after an encounter defined by grit over glamour.

The hosts went ahead in the 27th minute when Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net under pressure, handing Russia the advantage.

But Nigeria hit back in the second half, with Tolu Arokodare slotting home the equaliser in the 71st minute to cap a determined Super Eagles performance.

Russia dominated possession with 58%, completing 497 passes at an 87% accuracy rate. Nigeria, with 42% of the ball and 367 passes, focused on direct play and capitalised on their moments.

The Super Eagles registered four shots on target from six attempts, more efficient than Russia’s two on target from ten.

Both sides earned four corners, but Nigeria were caught offside three times compared to Russia’s one.

Russia committed 16 fouls and received three bookings. Nigeria had 11 fouls and a single yellow card in a contest that was more combative than free-flowing.
