The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 807 suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) and 74 related deaths across 22 states as of March 26, 2025. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stands at 9.2 percent.
The NCDC, in response to the outbreak has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to Kebbi, Sokoto and Katsina states which have recorded the highest number of suspected cases, deaths and CFRs. The deployment follows a substantial increase in reported cases from these states. The deployed teams consists of experts in case management and infection control and are to remain on the ground for an initial 14 days with the possibility of an extension.
The affected states include Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Ebonyi, Oyo, Bauchi, Ondo, Kaduna, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Ekiti, Niger, Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory and Sokoto.
The Director General of the NCDC —Dr. Jide Idris highlighted the significance of strict infection prevention measures and stressed the agency’s determination to supporting state governments in combating the outbreak. The response strategy includes strengthening case management, enhancing surveillance and engaging communities to prevent further spread.
