The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) is set to celebrate a remarkable milestone—40 years of dedicated service in shaping Nigeria’s environmental landscape. This anniversary marks not only the longevity of the organization but also pays tribute to the visionary leaders who have laid the groundwork for regulatory awareness and sustainable practices in the country.

Founded by forward-thinking professionals such as Prince Amid Adekunle, Dr. Alex Thomopolous, Adeyemi Wilson, Dr. Chris Ifeadi, Dr. Jeremiah Nwakwor, Berenegi Idoniboye-Obu, Isaac Ogwuru, Emmanuel Odogwu (of blessed memory), Dame Anne Ene-Ita, and Emeritus Distinguished Professor Babajide Alo, NES was established to address the pressing challenges facing the environment sector. These pioneers recognized the need for an external body to drive regulatory awareness and champion effective mitigation strategies, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

The 40th anniversary celebration will coincide with the 34th National Conference and 35th Annual General Meeting, scheduled to take place from October 23 to October 24, 2025, at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre in Abuja. The event will feature a keynote address by Sarah Mukherjee MBE, the CEO of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals, who will share her insights on the importance of sustainability in today’s world.

In the lead-up to the celebration, NES will also engage the public with a series of interviews featuring past presidents of the Society. These discussions will provide valuable insights into NES’s rich history and the significant impact it has made in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices over the past four decades.

NES invites individuals, organizations, policymakers, academia, and all stakeholders to join in this momentous occasion. This is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to collaborate towards a more sustainable future. Registration is now open, and all interested parties are encouraged to seize this chance to be part of history as NES marks four decades of excellence, collaboration, and advocacy for a better environment.
