Renowned Nigerian musician and live-band leader Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50.
The celebrated performer and founder of the legendary Shuga Band died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada, according to a statement released by his family on Monday.
Describing him as a “revered music icon, grandmaster, and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” the family praised his remarkable contributions to Nigerian music and live entertainment.
“Across more than three decades of excellence — on stage and in mentorship — he redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose,” the statement read.

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s life was one of resilience and triumph. Stricken by polio at age five, he overcame physical challenges to become one of Nigeria’s most accomplished live performers and a symbol of perseverance.
In 1998, he founded Shuga Band, which started performing at Pintos in Ikeja, Lagos, before evolving into a 14-member powerhouse celebrated for its electrifying performances at weddings, corporate events, and state functions.
Through Shuga Entertainment, Akiin Shuga built a legacy of professionalism and excellence in live performance, blending artistry with discipline. He also served as President of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBOAN), where he championed higher industry standards and better welfare for musicians.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, colleagues, and admirers, many celebrating him as a pioneer who kept the flame of live music burning bright in Nigeria.
Akiin Shuga’s rhythm may have ended, but his legacy continues to play on — loud, soulful, and unforgettable.
