In a thrilling turnaround, Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, has successfully qualified for the 2025 AfroBasket tournament, marking a significant achievement after a tumultuous qualifying campaign. Over the past weekend, the team secured three crucial victories against Libya, Uganda, and Cape Verde, overcoming the dire prospect of missing out on Africa’s premier basketball competition for the first time in 32 years.

The pressure was palpable as D’Tigers entered the final qualifying window. Having suffered a disheartening 0-3 record in their previous window, it was clear that only a clean sweep would ensure their passage to Angola. The team underwent a significant roster overhaul, bolstered by the inclusion of several professional players from overseas, although notably lacking NBA talent. This strategic change paid off, as they displayed resilience and skill in their performances.

Captain Ike Nwamu’s confidence was infectious, as he emphasized that the thought of failing to qualify was never an option for the squad. His belief in the team’s capabilities and rigorous preparation set the tone for what would become a historic comeback. The players responded to this challenge with determination, showcasing their rich basketball heritage despite the administrative hurdles and financial issues that have plagued the sport in Nigeria.

The journey began with a hard-fought victory over Libya, where D’Tigers edged out their opponents with an 89-82 scoreline. This was followed by a solid performance against Uganda, winning 72-62, before capping off the qualifying campaign with a decisive 78-62 triumph over Cape Verde. Each game saw the team adapting and improving, particularly in their second-quarter performances, where they consistently seized momentum.

Head Coach Abdulrahman Mohammed, who faced criticism following the team’s early losses, acknowledged the challenges faced off the court. Despite these obstacles, he emphasized the importance of the team’s unity and preparation, which ultimately led to their success in this critical qualifying phase.

With Libya finishing at the top of Group B, D’Tigers’ second-place finish, tied on points with Cape Verde, ensures their spot in the upcoming tournament, alongside Uganda. As they gear up for the 31st edition of the FIBA AfroBasket in Angola from August 12 to 24, 2025, D’Tigers’ focus will shift towards reclaiming their status among Africa’s best, inspired by the legacy of their female counterparts who have dominated the tournament in recent years.

In summary, D’Tigers have not only secured their place in AfroBasket 2025 but have also reignited hope among fans and stakeholders alike. Their journey from despair to triumph serves as a testament to their talent, resilience, and unwavering spirit. As the tournament approaches, the team will undoubtedly aim to build on this momentum and strive for glory once again.
