The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared that there are no longer any unregistered SIM cards active within the country’s telecommunications system.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, described the development as a major milestone in strengthening national and cyber security.

Maida acknowledged, however, that while all SIMs are officially registered, some individuals may still use false names during registration to conceal their identities, a criminal offence under Nigerian law.

He clarified that the NCC cannot regulate the authenticity of names provided during registration, as they are supplied by subscribers to mobile operators.

To enhance consumer choice and transparency, the NCC will launch a public coverage and tariff map in September, showcasing the best-performing operators by location.

Maida also highlighted ongoing efforts to stabilize the telecom sector, encourage capital investment, and enforce corporate governance. Operators will now be required to submit audited reports to build investor trust.

Addressing recent tariff adjustments, Maida explained that they were essential to align with the current cost realities after over a decade without a review. He assured that the new rates were approved with a balanced consideration for both operators and subscribers.

The Commission is also working with state governments to secure telecom infrastructure and resolve issues such as multiple taxation, which often hinder service delivery and sector growth.
