Nmecha Penalty Fires Leeds Past Everton on Premier League Return

August 19, 2025

Leeds United made a winning return to the Premier League as Lukas Nmecha’s 84th-minute penalty clinched a 1-0 victory over Everton at Elland Road.

Backed by a lively home crowd, Leeds pressed with intensity throughout, with Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James consistently troubling the visitors.

Despite their dominance, chances were limited, while Everton threatened sporadically, most notably when Carlos Alcaraz forced Lucas Perri into a sharp save.

The decisive moment came late on when James Tarkowski was penalised for handling Anton Stach’s strike inside the box.

Substitute Nmecha stepped up to slot the spot-kick past Jordan Pickford, securing a deserved three points for Daniel Farke’s men.

The result marked Everton’s fourth successive opening-day defeat, while Leeds celebrated a triumphant return to the top flight and became the second promoted side to win on the opening weekend.
