Prominent northern political groups have called on former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, to align with their emerging political movement ahead of the 2027 general elections. Describing him as a principled and valuable politician, these groups believe Aregbesola’s participation would significantly bolster their political ambitions.
Aregbesola and his political faction, Omoluabi Progressives, recently announced their departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal marginalization, unfair suspensions, and expulsions without due process. Following this move, both the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed interest in having him join their ranks.
Last week, the NNPP’s national leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, met with Aregbesola at his residence in Lagos, reportedly to discuss national political issues and potential collaboration. While the details of their discussion remain undisclosed, the meeting fueled speculation about Aregbesola’s next political move.
Similarly, the League of Northern Democrats (LND), an influential political group seeking to establish itself as a new party, has publicly expressed interest in Aregbesola’s involvement. The group has been consulting key politicians across the country to solidify its structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the spokesperson for the LND, Ladan Salihu, stated that Aregbesola embodies the values the group seeks in its leadership.
“We are not a political party yet, but we would like him to be part of our movement in 2027,” Salihu said. “Aregbesola is a notable and exemplary political figure. He is a fighter. He is somebody who plays politics of conscience. He does not play politics for self-aggrandisement.”
Despite the growing calls for him to align with one of the emerging political forces, Aregbesola has remained silent about his next steps. The Publicity Secretary of Omoluabi Progressives, Abosede Oluwaseun, confirmed that the former governor has received overtures from several political figures and parties but has yet to signal his preferred direction.
“Many political bigwigs and parties have been approaching Aregbesola to be part of them, but he has yet to give any clue of his next political move,” Oluwaseun said.
Aregbesola, a two-term governor of Osun State and former Minister of Interior, has long been recognized as a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape. His next move is expected to have significant implications, particularly in the southwest, where he commands a loyal following.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 elections, the political landscape continues to shift, with new alliances being formed. Whether Aregbesola will join the NNPP, the PDP, or the emerging League of National Democrats remains to be seen. However, his political future remains a subject of intense speculation and interest.
