Nottingham Forest have dismissed head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, just three games into the new Premier League season.

The Portuguese manager’s position had been under scrutiny for weeks after he admitted his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had broken down.

Forest confirmed his departure in a late-night statement, thanking him for “a very successful era” at the City Ground.

Nuno took charge in December 2023 following Steve Cooper’s exit and ensured Forest stayed in the top flight. Last season he led them to seventh place, their best league finish since 1995 and qualification for European competition for the first time in 30 years.

He signed a new three-year deal in June, but tensions behind the scenes grew over transfer business and recruitment strategy.

Despite investing nearly £200m in 13 new players this summer, Nuno expressed frustration that the club had “wasted a good chance” in the market.

His relationship with Marinakis deteriorated, with disagreements dating back to last season when the owner publicly confronted him after a 2-2 draw with Leicester.

Forest, who currently sit 10th in the Premier League after a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham, are already in talks to appoint a replacement. Former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is among those considered.
