Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the sudden resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down from the position with immediate effect. Meranda’s brief tenure as Speaker lasted just 49 days, making her the youngest person to ever hold the office in the state’s legislative history.

During a plenary session held to formalize the leadership transition, members of the Assembly paid tribute to Meranda, acknowledging her contributions during her short time in office. However, her abrupt resignation and Obasa’s swift reinstatement have raised speculation about political maneuvering within the Lagos political establishment.

Obasa’s return to the speakership marks a significant turn in the state’s legislative affairs, particularly given the circumstances of his earlier removal. His reinstatement suggests a recalibration of political alliances, with key stakeholders in Lagos politics—potentially including the powerful Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and other influential figures—playing a decisive role in shaping the Assembly’s leadership. The decision to bring him back could indicate a new consensus among Lagos political elites, ensuring continuity and stability within the House of Assembly.

Despite his experience and established political network, Obasa’s reinstatement may not be without controversy. His return raises questions about the democratic processes guiding leadership transitions in the Assembly. For some observers, it underscores the influence of entrenched political interests that have long dominated Lagos State’s governance. Others, however, see his comeback as a move to restore order and cohesion within the legislature, particularly in a politically sensitive period.

The rapid changes in the Assembly’s leadership reflect the fluid nature of Lagos politics, where shifting allegiances and strategic realignments are common. This latest development signals the possibility of further adjustments in the state’s political landscape, as stakeholders navigate the evolving dynamics of power. While Obasa’s reinstatement may bring short-term stability, it remains to be seen how it will impact governance and legislative decision-making in the coming months.
