The Obidient Movement has leveled serious allegations against former National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Barrister Julius Abure, accusing him of deploying thugs to physically assault Ms. Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama P, a vocal supporter of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, the group called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to launch a comprehensive investigation into the alleged attack and ensure accountability for those behind it.

The petition came after reports indicated that Mama P, who the movement described as a victim of political violence, had been taken into custody by the Edo State Police Command under circumstances that remain unclear.

Expressing outrage, the Obidient Movement said: “We are compelled to alert Nigerians and the international community to this shameful and dangerous development. Julius Abure, rather than conducting himself responsibly, has resorted to thuggery and violence by dispatching armed hoodlums to target Mama P, a respected activist and one of the pillars of our movement.”

The group went further to denounce the incident as a direct affront to women, democracy, and Nigeria’s political culture.

“This barbaric act is an insult to womanhood, a desecration of our democratic values, and further proof that Abure has abandoned any claim to integrity. To unleash thugs on Mama P is cowardly and exposes the bankruptcy of his character and the emptiness of his political vision.”

While vowing that intimidation will not silence its members, the movement stressed that such actions only reinforce its determination.

“Abure’s resort to violence will not break our resolve. On the contrary, it deepens the commitment of Nigerians to resist tyranny in any form,” the statement read.

The group urged security authorities to rise to the occasion: “We call on the Inspector General of Police and all relevant agencies to immediately investigate this crime and prosecute both the perpetrators and their sponsors. Violence must never be entrenched as a tool of politics in Nigeria.”

Declaring Abure unfit for leadership, the Obidient Movement concluded: “Julius Abure has demonstrated he is unfit to lead, unfit to inspire, and unfit to represent the aspirations of a New Nigeria.

His thuggery stains our democracy and insults all who believe in fairness, justice, and peace. We stand with Mama P. We stand with truth. No amount of violence will derail the march to a New Nigeria.”

However, in a swift counter-reaction, Obiora Ifoh, spokesperson for the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, rejected the allegations.

He claimed instead that Mama P had been the aggressor, accusing her of repeatedly subjecting Abure to both verbal and physical harassment during and after a flight from Abuja to Benin.
