Ogun Monarch Supports Iyabo Obasanjo’s Governorship Bid.
A traditional ruler in Ogun State has endorsed former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s bid for the governorship, emphasizing the need for greater female participation in the state’s political arena.
Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, expressed his support during a media interaction on Friday, following a private visit from Obasanjo to his palace.
Obasanjo has recently declared her intention to run for the state’s highest office after rejoining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The monarch pointed out Ogun State’s historic legacy of strong and accomplished women, asserting that the state should embrace leadership roles for them. He referenced notable figures such as Efunsetan Anniwura and Efunyela Tinubu as examples of this tradition.
“The fate of Ogun State is closely linked to that of Nigeria. Our history, from legendary figures like Efunsetan Anniwura to modern leaders, shows that Ogun is rich in remarkable women,” stated Oba Akinyemi.
He also praised contemporary female leaders, highlighting the state’s Chief Judge, Mosunmola Dipeolu, as a source of pride.
The royal figure commended Obasanjo’s qualifications, recalling her previous roles as a Commissioner for Health and a Senator, and noted her philanthropic work through the Iyanuwura Foundation, which has significantly impacted community development in Ogun.
“The lasting influence of the Iyanuwura Foundation is well-known. She has dedicated herself to uplifting people throughout the state. Her medical background and generosity are commendable,” he remarked.
Oba Akinyemi urged men to reconsider the traditionally limited political space for women, questioning why a candidate of Obasanjo’s caliber should face discouragement.
“When someone as qualified as her is ready to step up, it’s time for men to reflect on their views and create more opportunities for women. Failing to do so risks us being seen as chauvinists,” he asserted.
He drew comparisons with established democracies, noting that women globally face no barriers to holding high political offices. He cited female prime ministers in Europe and Kamala Harris’s near-presidential candidacy in the U.S. as examples.
“In Western nations, no political role is inaccessible to women. We should not discourage their competition; their involvement is a positive and progressive step,” he said.
The Eselu emphasized that Obasanjo’s pursuit of the governorship is a fundamental right of her Nigerian citizenship, regardless of the outcome.
“As traditional rulers, we cannot predict the future, but we must recognize her right to aspire to be governor. It’s a matter of civil liberty,” he clarified.
However, he noted that the visit was private and not a formal request for royal endorsement. “Her visit was personal and not for royal blessings. She knows the appropriate channels and timing for that,” he explained.
The monarch also highlighted the need for political unity across Ogun State’s three senatorial districts, mentioning that aspirants from Ogun West, including Obasanjo, are actively engaging with stakeholders in Ogun Central and other areas to foster collaboration.
Obasanjo arrived at the palace with a delegation that included prominent APC member Pastor Abiodun Ajayi and Chief Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi, the Bada of Owu Kingdom in Abeokuta. The meeting lasted several hours, but Obasanjo left without making any statements to the press.
