Traditional and community leaders in Osogbo have united in a strong call for the eminent 2026 governorship ticket to be zoned to their city, ending what they describe as a long-standing political sidelining.
With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) having set the governorship election date for Saturday, August 8, 2026, Osogbo voices are now louder in demanding equity in political power.
Though Osogbo was once a pivotal voting bloc during its time under the old Oyo State, none of its indigenes has held the governorship since Osun State’s creation 34 years ago — a fact leaders say must change.
Speaking on Oroki Asala, a programme aired on the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, High Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, the Baale of Gbodofon and head of Osogbo’s Council of Baales, emphasized the newfound unity among local leaders. He credited the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, with mediating past divisions by launching the Osogbo Action Committee and the Osogbo Elders Council.
“The Elders Council has succeeded in bringing every Baale on board,” Ibrahim said, affirming their resolve to push for an Osogbo governor.
Also speaking, Prince Adeleke Oduola Ibiloye, leader of the Osogbo Elders Council, urged reciprocity from other parts of the state. “We have consistently supported others. Now the time has come for the rest of Osun to support Osogbo,” he declared, adding, “The 2026 governorship ticket should be ours.”
Several prominent Osogbo indigenes have reportedly begun positioning themselves to contest under different parties including APC, PDP, and ADC, reinforcing optimism that 2026 may finally break Osogbo’s governorship drought.
