William Osula scored a superb late winner as 10-man Newcastle United defeated
Manchester United 2-1 at St James’ Park, handing Michael Carrick his first defeat as
United manager.
Anthony Gordon had given Newcastle the lead from the penalty spot after Bruno
Fernandes fouled him in the box, but Casemiro quickly equalised with a near-post
header from Fernandes’ free-kick late in the first half.
Newcastle had earlier been reduced to 10 men when Jacob Ramsey was sent off for
a second booking, but the hosts showed resilience in a lively atmosphere on
Tyneside.
Just as the match looked set to end level, Osula cut inside the box and fired past
Senne Lammens in the 90 th minute to send the home crowd into celebration.
After the game, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe revealed the goal was no
surprise given the striker’s extra effort in training.
“He asked after training for 10 more balls yesterday,” Howe said. “A carbon copy of
the goal he scored today. If you do the work, you get the reward.”
The victory lifts Newcastle to 12th in the table, while Manchester United remains third
despite the late setback.
