Palmeiras are the first team into the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals after a tense 1-0 extra-time win over Brazilian rivals Botafogo in Philadelphia.
The all-Brazilian clash was cagey and physical, with few chances in normal time. Palmeiras’ Estêvão threatened repeatedly after half-time, forcing Botafogo keeper John into key saves, while Maurício saw a close-range header tipped over.
With the match goalless after 90 minutes, substitute Paulinho finally broke the deadlock in extra time, twisting past Marlon Freitas and finishing low into the corner.
Palmeiras had to endure a nervy finish after captain Gustavo Gómez was sent off late on, but Botafogo failed to capitalise.
Verdão, who topped Group A, now await Chelsea in the last eight, while Botafogo, who beat Palmeiras in the 2024 Copa Libertadores campaign, crash out after yet another 1-0 defeat—their eighth in succession by that scoreline.
