As political maneuvering intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senate Minority Leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Abba Moro, has revealed that discussions are underway to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to return to the party and possibly contest the presidency.

Moro, who represents Benue South Senatorial District, disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“In the run-up to 2027, I am aware some individuals have been talking to Peter Obi: ‘Come back home, this is what we are planning, and if you return, you stand a chance of being the candidate,’” Moro said.

On the prospect of Jonathan making a comeback, he added: “Some persons are also speaking to the former president to run. It’s a possibility,” he said.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 under the PDP, became the first incumbent to lose re-election in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic after his 2015 defeat to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Since leaving office, he has maintained a low political profile and has not been active in PDP affairs, though calls for his return persist.

Obi, meanwhile, was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate under the PDP in 2019 before defecting to the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2023 polls, where he secured the presidential ticket.

His candidacy, buoyed by strong youth support, saw him finish third with over six million votes, behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku of the PDP.

With less than two years to the 2027 elections, Obi has aligned with other opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and declared his intention to run again, though his eventual platform remains uncertain.
