Peter Obi Condemns Assault On NYSC Member, Demands Immediate Justice

August 20, 2025

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly denounced the reported assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, by members of a local vigilante group in Anambra State.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Obi described the incident as “inhumane, primitive, and an affront to our shared sense of humanity.”

Expressing deep concern, the former Anambra State governor said the brutality is a shameful reminder of lingering societal failures. “As an Anambrian, I am not only ashamed but heartbroken that such cruelty still exists in 2025—a time when we should be striving for a more just and civilised society,” he wrote.

Obi emphasized that no society should condone abuse, humiliation, or the dehumanisation of its citizens—particularly women and other vulnerable groups. “That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine,” he noted.

He urged law enforcement to promptly identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators, adding that they should be made examples to deter future violations.

“We must ensure that justice is served and that such acts of savagery are never repeated,” he stated.

Beyond legal action, Obi advocated for stronger community protection measures and policy reforms to safeguard human dignity across the country.

“Our humanity must always take precedence. Without it, we are lost in a sea of cruelty,” he concluded.
