Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, is ramping up consultations with political leaders ahead of his widely expected 2027 presidential bid.

According to reports, Obi recently met former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to seek his support and discourage him from entering the 2027 race. He later briefed ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on the discussion and solicited his continued backing.

A source close to Obi’s camp disclosed that his official declaration scheduled for November, will also clarify whether he will remain in the LP or switch to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which some of his supporters have recently embraced.

Before making the announcement, Obi is expected to hold further talks with former heads of state, including Generals Ibrahim Babangida, T.Y. Danjuma, Yakubu Gowon, and Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as key traditional rulers.

Speaking on the consultations, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, described them as “friendly engagements” and urged supporters to stay active.

“Obi is still a member of the Labour Party, and any decision on his platform will be communicated after consultations are completed,” Tanko said.

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed Obi’s efforts, insisting that Nigerians are satisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s performance.

APC spokesperson Bala Ibrahim said: “Obi did the same in 2023 and still lost. We are confident he will be defeated again in 2027, as our government continues to deliver on its promises and restore hope to Nigerians.”
