Tragedy occurred in Igbesa, Ogun State, on Thursday as Inspector Ajele Oloyede of the Nigeria Police Force passed away from a self-imposed gunshot wound while on duty at a ceramics company. The situations concerning the incident remain uncertain, and police authorities have initiate an investigation to ascertain whether it was accidental or intentional.
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer – Omolola Odutola, the event was discovered by another officer, Tolorunloju Stephen —who was on special duty from the Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos. Stephen had just returned from Ikeja around 1:20 p.m. and found Oloyede with his head on a table. When asked about his condition, Oloyede reportedly responded that he was fine.
Stephen then placed his pistol on the table and headed to the restroom. Moments later, a gunshot was heard. He rushed back to find Oloyede in a pool of blood. The officer was taken to Ota General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police recovered the deceased’s pistol at the scene and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran for further probe. The body has been deposited for autopsy and the family has been notified.
