Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, received a hero’s welcome at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after clinching their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, lauded the team’s “discipline, focus, and unity,” describing their 75–68 triumph over Mali in the final as a testament to Nigerian excellence.
“You have done the nation proud. Winning the Afrobasket championship five times in a row is no small feat,” Shettima said. “Your victory brings honour not just to sports, but to the entire country.
You deserve every accolade, every recognition, and every reward.”To mark their achievement, each player received $100,000, a national honour as Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and a three-bedroom flat in Abuja’s Renewed Hope Housing Estate.
Members of the technical crew were awarded $50,000 each.The event, attended by top government officials, sports administrators, and family members, underscored the administration’s renewed commitment to supporting sporting excellence.
