Civil society organisations aligned with the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday staged a protest at the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the inclusion of the party’s candidates in the upcoming nationwide bye-elections.
Dozens of demonstrators, armed with banners and placards bearing messages such as “INEC, who is using you against LP,” “Mahmood stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,” and “Tell INEC to obey court orders,” assembled peacefully at the commission’s headquarters from around 11:00 a.m.
However, in a swift reaction, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, distanced the Labour Party from the protest. In a statement signed by her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, the party described the organisers as “impostors” and “political impersonators,” asserting that the demonstration was not authorised by the legitimate leadership of the party.
