AZ Alkmaar took a commanding step towards the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 with a resounding 4-1 victory over 10-man Galatasaray in their play-off first leg, marking their fourth straight win across all competitions.

The Dutch side struck early, with Sven Mijnans curling in a stunning free-kick in the 12th minute. Though Galatasaray responded with a thunderous strike from Roland Sallai, Alkmaar regained the lead before halftime when Troy Parrott coolly converted from the penalty spot after Baris Alper Yilmaz fouled Seiya Maikuma.

The Turkish giants’ hopes crumbled after the break as Kaan Ayhan received a second yellow card, reducing them to 10 men. AZ capitalized swiftly, with Jordy Clasie slotting home before David Moller Wolfe fired in the fourth after a saved Mijnans shot.

With a three-goal cushion, Alkmaar are in firm control ahead of the return leg in Istanbul, where Galatasaray must overturn the deficit to keep their European hopes alive.
